My young daughter has always been a rather unique person with a strong spirit.  I should think that a lot of children are, and there are no two children that are really alike. Now my little girl really loves most things you give to her, but sometimes, the types of things she will pick out as her favorites of the moment will really surprise me.  She has her phases like other kids do. Sometimes she just has to have girly princess pink fluffy stuff, and at other times she will be Wiggles mad.  Just lately though, more than once she has asked me for a dinosaur toy.  She has absolutely never shown an interest in dino toys before.  These were, in my small mind, in the realms of  “boys toys” , but hey, there were female dinosaurs weren’t there!

Now the particular types of dinosaur toys that she likes and I have bought for her are fortunately quite inexpensive. They are made out of  a pliable but rather sturdy plastic/rubber material, which she will always take with her when she has her daily bath. As I say, these were really cheap toys!   I have bought them  individually and I dont think they cost me more than five dollars a piece ( even for the bigger ones), and these toys are meant to last. They have and will continue to survive a real battering – being thrown about in the garden, tails chewed, crushed, drowned and various other maltreatment you would expect from a young child.  I have been quite astounded to find how well they are faring for so little cash!

Now, there are other dino toys which are way more expensive than these, but I just have to look at her face when she sees pictures of them, or in the superstore, to know that whatever they cost, they are going to be worth every penny I spend.  You can choose from huge velvety plush stuffed dinosaurs or rather expensive  robotic versions which can walk and roar, being fully automated, remote controlled dinosaur replicas and very detailed in appearance. Whatever she wants, within reason of course, she can have as she has shown such an interest in the current ones.  I daresay, the bath will be out of bounds for the next purchase, but I am sure it will be worth the money spent both at Christmas and her birthday, which follows shortly after. Though I haven’t discovered much for her age group that is really educational yet, I am still browsing for something.

Some dinosaur toys are borne from TV series and shows, masterminded by the big toy corporations who really know what kids like!  For some strange reason, kids love dinosaurs, as so many TV shows and movies seem to feature them. Big Purple Barney, The Wiggles Dorothy, Land Before Time, Jurassic Park, Disney’s Dinosaur …   There are many products based on these shows, from DVDs, CDs and books, interactive toys, baby finger puppets and grasping toys, cuddle toys, scary looking realistic sharptoothed T-Rex’s and huge long-necked Brachiosaurs, there’s something for most age ranges for kids to enjoy.  Best of all they don’t have to cost much money at all.   Dinosaurs are a long distant part of the history of our planet, a really interesting subject for learning about which can be discussed and explored.  It is one area that adults seem to like as much as children do.  The savage T-Rex swooping down on its prey seems to be highly entertaining with slightly older kids and the cute gang of baby dino’s led by Littlefoot in the Land Before Time, battling with their various problems appeal so much to the younger kids too.

From the  laying of the dino egg to the fully grown adult, there is such a variety in the world of the dinosaur and subsequently the dinosaur toy itself, that we will always be fascinated with them.

Since the event of Disneys Dinosaur , Night in the Museum and Jurassic Park films (4 due out soon!) , there has been an huge increase in the availability of dinosaur games and toys.  Many children are very interested in these toys as they represent the ultimate danger of wild beasts – and children just love that!  Of course not all dinosaurs are carnivorous and dinosaur films and books depict the more pleasant side of the herivore too.   There is such a variety in the range of dino toys produced that there is something for everone.  Choose from toy Brachiosaurs, flying pteradons, T-Rex, Triceratops, Stegasaurs, Raptors, Allosaurs and many more.
